The poem “Mother to Son”, written by Langston Hughes, 1922 is a story of hopefulness and never giving up. Throughout the poem Langston Hughes utilizes a wide range of symbolism and imagery the audience can relate to. The speaker throughout the poem is the mother; she is giving advice to her son. Her life has been far from great; it’s been hard and difficult. In the poem she speaks about how life has been a stair case, “It’s had splinters in it” (Hughes, 1922) meaning life has not been easy and has had many challenges to deal with.
